KALIBO, Aklan – The province of Aklan listed 151 cases of dengue from January to May 27 of this year, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO) here.
Unlike in the previous years when Aklan towns posted zero cases of dengue, all 17 municipalities of this province recorded cases of dengue, with Kalibo having the highest cases at 50.
Numancia, just across Kalibo Bridge, recorded 14 cases; Ibajay – 14, Banga and Malay with 11 cases each.
The rest had seven cases and below, with Lezo and Buruanga having the lowest with one dengue case each.
Lezo is the smallest municipality of Aklan and has the smallest population.
Buruanga, on the other hand, had zero dengue case during previous years.
Dr. Cornelio Cuachon, Provincial Health Officer I, cautioned Aklanons anew to take extra measures in cleaning their surroundings to prevent the breeding of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
He cited recent students which showed that species of a day-biting mosquito can already cause dengue.
Meanwhile, other common diseases monitored by PHO are influenza, with 386 cases from January to May 27, 2012, and typhoid, with 164 cases for the same period.
As with dengue cases, Kalibo also listed the highest number of influenza cases with 332, and typhoid, 46.*PIA
