In a bid to prevent the occurrence of crimes, particularly robbery, the Police Regional Office (PRO) VI has ordered anew all police units to heighten the conduct of checkpoints in Western Visayas.
“The conduct of checkpoints is a good tool to complement beat patrol operations,” said Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol Jr., police regional director.
He also ordered the maximum deployment of police officers for beat patrol and mobilization of Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams.
The Motorized Anti-Street Crime Operatives will also accompany the implementation of Police Integrated Patrol System.
“Checkpoints and patrols constitute good police visibility. More than the solution and arrest of criminals, it’s an effective way to prevent crimes from happening,” he added.
He cited the robbery incident in the municipality of Dueñas where the suspects were intercepted in a checkpoint at Calinog town.
10-POINT CHECKPOINT RULES
In the conduct of checkpoint, Querol reminded policemen to adhere to the guidelines set by the PNP.
Checkpoints must be well-lighted, properly identified and manned by uniformed personnel.
Motorists were advised that upon approach, they should slowdown, dim headlights and turn on cabin lights; never step out of the vehicle; lock all doors of vehicles during inspection since only visual search is allowed; and never submit to physical and body search.
As a guideline, motorists could now be asked to open the glove compartment, trunk or bags.
However, motorists are told to be courteous but firm in answering, assert your rights, have presence of mind and do not panic.
Also, they must keep their driver's license and car registration handy; be ready to use your mobile phones at anytime; speed dial emergency numbers; and they should report violations immediately.*
