Solon calls for probe on possible ill effects of Jalaur dam

A week after the inauguration of the P11.2-billion Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project II, a partylist representative is pushing for the investigation on the said dam at the House of Representatives.

According to Bayan Muna Represtative Neri Colmenaris, he will push for the investigation on the said dam in Calinog, Iloilo after receiving reports that it is a threat to the residents in the area.

Colmenares said, "There should be an investigation before the implementation of the project."

He said that he received claims that the largest reservoir dam outside Luzon will put the indigenous people in a risky position.

Earlier, Jesa Aligasen, Anakbayan-Panay spokesperson claimed that the area is disaster-prone because the project site sits on top of the active West Panay Fault.

"It will drown a part of the ancestral land of the Tumandok indigenous peoples in at least nine barangays in the municipality of Calinog, Iloilo alone," said Aligasen.

The project, which was inaugurated last week by President Benigno Aquino III will involve the construction of a 102-meter dam and 6.6-megawatt hydropower plant in Barangay Agcalaga, Calinog, Iloilo.

The project will help increase rice production from 141,945 tons to 297,958 tons per year and will generate 86,400 cubic meters of bulk water daily.*
