Claiming the world's pound-for-pound king was cheated in his title defense against American Timothy Bradley, a 60-year-old avid fan of "Pambansang Kamao" Manny Pacquiao yelled in disbelief and died.
Bienvenido Perez of Cotabato City died of cardiac arrest after Bradley dethroned Pacquiao in their 12-round WBO welterweight title bout Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Henry Macion, a village chair here and Perez's relative, said Perez was an avid fan of the Sarangani congressman and had watched Pacquiao's last 15 fights before Bradley.
"He could not accept that his idol lost in a fight clearly he won," Macion said of Perez who had heart ailments.
"As the ring announcer announced the results, Perez stood up and yelled his idol was cheated, chanting "luto" (rigged)," Macion recalled.
He said he and about 20 other family members and relatives viewed the fight on television at home.
Macion recalled that Perez would yell every time the "Pambansang Kamao" connected on Bradley. "He was very happy during the fight until it ended and shortly before the results were announced."
As the announcer declared Bradley as the new WBO welterweight champion, Perez stood up and showed his disappointment.
"He was depressed, he was disappointed and collapsed," Macion said, adding that they rushed the man to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
He said that Perez had watched the Pacquiao versus Manuel Marquez bout and he was so happy then.
"Now that Pacquiao lost in a controversial split decision, he was very mad," Macion said.*PNA
