KALIBO, Aklan – The local government of Kalibo is now readying requirements in order to put up in this capital town a first class abattoir or slaughterhouse.
Kalibo Information Officer Ron Bautista said moves had been initiated by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso Alcala to hasten the construction of the much-needed facility in the province.
He said a staff from the DA inspected the proposed site recently.
Bautista said a representative from a United Nations agency , through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also informed Kalibo Mayor William Lachica to inform him that Kalibo had been chosen as recipient of the project.
This good news, he said, was relayed to Kalibo's leaders and stakeholders during a seminar on meat hygiene, welfare on food animals and its pertinent laws for meat traders, vendors, butchers and aides held at the 3rd Floor of Kalibo Municipal Building.
The acquisition of a Double "A" if not Triple "A" slaughterhouse has been a dream of Kalibo, being a capital town of Aklan whose public market is the buying post of food supplies for Boracay and other municipalities of Aklan.
For its part, the Provincial Local Price Coordinating Council (PLPCC) had long been pushing for a first class slaughterhouse for Kalibo to ensure that meat and meat products sold in the market and produced by Aklan's numerous meat-processors are clean, safe and fit for consumption.
The PLPCC is chaired by Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez with DTI-Aklan Provincia Director Diosdado P. Cadena Jr., as Co-Chair.*PIA
