Inspired by the progress of Melaka River in Malaysia, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the city government can learn from Malaysian Government in its plan to develop Iloilo River.
In a press conference, Mabilog shared his amazement to the progress seen around Melaka River – which is noted as one of the most attractive rivers in Asia.
He said it took about 12 years for the Malaysian Government to fully develop the river.
"My visit to South Korea was very timely, it went well and I have the opportunity to have a conversation with the Melaka Mayor, so we will likely follow the development there here in Iloilo City," said Mabilog.
He said the development of Iloilo River is in line with the city government's thrust to lure more tourists and investors in the city, which in turn, can boost the development of the local economy and livelihood of the communities near the river.
He said part of the Iloilo River rehabilitation and development plan is the construction of various attractions such as waterparks, river cruise, commercial establishment, among others.
The project, which started a year and a half ago, aims to benefit both the local government and the residents living near the area and at the same time, promote a partnership that would ensure the river's preservation and protection.
"My first priority is the river cruise that would start from North San Jose Molo down to Sooc, so that the people conveniently cross there," he added.*
