The Iloilo City Government has requested the Senate to review the franchise granted to Panay Electric Company (PECO). It is also considering opening a franchise to other players in the power distribution industry in order to ensure a reliable and continued power supply in Iloilo City.
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said they already sent communication to the Senate yesterday addressed to Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon.
Mabilog said the frequent power interruptions in the city pushed him to make the request for the sake of the city's developments through business and investment.
"The city badly needs a sufficient and reliable supply of power to give impetus to development and progress of the city," he said.
Mabilog said the blackout that lasted for almost nine hours last week resulted to business loss, cessation of office operations, meat products and other processed food gone stale and cancelation of gatherings.
"All these unexpected power failures have caused millions of pesos in losses with no valid explanation from PECO, the sole power distributor of Iloilo City," he said.
Mabilog said PECO lacks the proper system to address this kind of problem.
"They should look for a system or alternative solution that when one district has a blockout, other districts will not suffer the same fate we are experiencing right now," he said.*
