Incumbent barangay officials will have two more years to serve their constituents once the October 2013 barangay election is postponed.
This, after a bill was filed in the House of Representatives seeking to move the said exercise to October 2015.
The Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms chaired by Rep. Elpidio Barzaga of Dasmarinas City has already approved the proposed extension for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections during its first committee hearing, according to Iloilo Lone District Representative Jerry Trenas.
House Bill 6005 seeks to reset the 2013 barangay elections to the last Monday of October 2015 instead of October 2013.
Under this bill, Trenas said, barangay officials will sit five years in one term and they will be only allowed to run for the said post for two consecutive terms.
The bill will still undergo several readings.
If approved, the bill will promote government savings as well as add two more years to the barangay officials' terms. This way, they can continue implementing their projects with minimal interference from politicians.
He added that the pursuance of the barangay election in October 2013 will affect the continuity of projects in the village level.*
